Drill Down To Transaction Data From Insights/Reporting
One of the major reasons I migrated over to EveryDollar was for categorization and data reporting on my transactions. The trendlines, bar graphs, and pie charts are good reporting features but they really need to extend down all the way to the transaction data layer that drives them.
A user should be able to click on Transportation/Travel>Maintenance, and then immediately scroll through all of those "Maintenance" categorized transactions directly from there. Being able to subcategorize that Maintenance by multiple vehicles (for example) would be even better, but I don't want to ask for too much. It just should be possible to click for a summary of relevant transactions while the user is looking from the big picture of their financial outflows.
“Whoah, why are my transportation expenses so high this year?"
*click*
"Huh, looks like I spent a ton on Maintenance "
*click*
“Oh I see, that was when the transmission went out back in January while we were on that road trip."
In data reporting I've usually seen this functionality termed “drilling down" as if through layers of an onion. Or if transaction reporting is a tree, you start with the outer layer view looking at the base of the tree, and then follow the branches out to specific classes and categories of spending. In my opinion you should eventually be able to look and see what is "weighing the branches down" without having to guess, or go to a different page to figure that out.
My current workflow for figuring out why a certain category in a certain month was high or low involves taking note of which month and which category is in question, then clicking over to budget mode, clicking back through until I find that month's budget, then clicking on that category as if I'm going to edit the budget, and only THEN do I get a panel on the right with the actual list of transactions where my money went. It's almost as if the transactions are treated as an afterthought, when they are the data that drives this entire software.
Maybe this is something to look at implementing? In my experience with PowerBI, Incite, or other banking software this is a fairly straightforward feature. I would love to know the developers' thoughts.
